Message Title

“Peace and War” – Revelation 19:11-21

Message Outline:

Big Idea:  Jesus Christ will secure victory and vengeance when he establishes his millennial reign at the war to end all wars.

Baptist Faith and Message:  It is the duty of Christians to seek peace with all men on principles of righteousness. In accordance with the spirit and teachings of Christ they should do all in their power to put an end to war.  The true remedy for the war spirit is the gospel of our Lord. The supreme need of the world is the acceptance of His teachings in all the affairs of men and nations, and the practical application of His law of love. Christian people throughout the world should pray for the reign of the Prince of Peace.

Sermon Outline:

I)                  Anticipate Victory (11-16).

II)               Acknowledge Vengeance (17-21)

Leading the Session Helps/Discussion Questions

v     Ask the group to close their eyes and read Revelation 19:11-21. What images came to mind as the passage was read? (Write these down on your board or on a large piece of paper.) What images bring comfort? What images bring fear or a sense of anxiety?

v     If you had to summarize the passage for a child, what would be your main point?

v     How is Jesus depicted in the passage? Is this the way we normally see Jesus? Is this view of Jesus a source of comfort or fear?

v     According to the passage, how does Jesus make war? (with justice) What is justice? (according to Webster, it is the principle or ideal of moral rightness.) If that is justice, what does this imply about what Jesus is warring against? (what is wrong, sin) What does this say about our God? (That He hates sin. He is not ok with it, so much so, that is what He wars against.)

v     Is there spiritual warfare going on around us today, here in this moment? (Defend your answer with Scripture.) 1 Peter 2:11, 2 Corinthians 10:3-6, Ephesians 6:10-18 Knowing that, what do we do? (See Ephesians 6:10-18)

v     What are some things you learned about the following aspects of the passage? Jesus’ eyes, crowns, His secret name, the blood on the robe, the armies of heaven, the sword of His mouth, His wrath, the birds, the beast

v     What does the mention of the final hell in verse 20 motivate you to do? (For some, it will probably be to be thankful for what they are saved from. For others, it may be motivation to share the Truth with people who need to hear.)

v     What is the Christian’s responsibility to making peace in this world? (seek peace with all men)

v     Is righteousness to be sacrificed for there to be peace? Romans 12:18

Application

v     Read Revelation 19:11-21 in your daily devotion time this next week on several occasions and reflect on the end times. Let the Holy Spirit lead you to live out your life this week in light of that passage.
